Results

The project has started to produce some very useful results, some of them in terms of already valid demonstrators:

  • Freehand mm-wave scanner
  • Freehand antenna diagnostics

FREEHAND MM-WAVE SCANNER

freehand demonstrator for scanning has been developed. The system enables scanning with a very compact device, which can be easily embedded or hybridized into handhelds devices such as smartphones or tablets.

Overall, the major consequence of the previous development is that this technology enables to turn an smartphone into a mm-wave scanner!

A prototype in terms of the radar SOLI, which has been developed by Google and Infineon to equip smartphones with gesture detection capabilities, has been successfully tested. You can find some demonstration in the following video:

It is also interesting to note that the system and the method underneath this technology have been patented. If you are interested on this technology, please let us know, we will be glad to answer.

FREEHAND ANTENNA DIAGNOSTICS

In a similar fashion to the previous development, a freehand antenna diagnosis has been developed. This tool enables to get low-level information of an antenna (e.g., the field at the aperture or the radiation pattern) with a handheld device. Moreover, it can also be integrated in a smartphone or even use the phone to scan the antenna.

Among a large bunch of applications, we would like to highlight the next ones:

  • Beamforming capabilities: the tool enables to assess the beamforming capabilities of mm-wave systems such as the ones required by 5G antennas and other MIMO systems.
  • EMF evaluation: this tool enables to accurate compute the near- and far-field radiation enabling to foresee the EMF level according to ICNIRP guidelines.

This technology has also been patented. You can check the capabilities of the method in the following video as well as in this presentation, in which also drone technology developed by some of the researchers is described.
